Moog Semi-Modular Setup

After three years of on and off gear collecting, I finally managed to assemble all four of the Moog semi-modular synthesizer modules.

  • Mother 32: basic synthesizer with a standard sequencer.
  • Subharmonicon: a synthesizer capable of complex polyrhythms.
  • DFAM: a percussive synthesizer.
  • Spectravox: a synthesizer with vocoder functionality.

The following is my first attempt at getting the whole band to play together as a complete DAWless rig.

Fixed Routing

This was how I set up the fixed routing for the rig. The idea was to create a complete rig and instrument that would not require further gear/units to operate fully. This is the fixed routing as opposed to routing as a result of temporary patches between the modular gear.

  • The Mackie mixer is at the heart of the setup, handling all the audio signals.
  • The Spectravox is set up to play as a live jam synth, but can also be used as a vocoder.
  • Sessions can be recorded via the Tascam recorder, which can also behave as a two channel USB audio interface so the audio can be sent directly to a DAW if necessary, although this is strictly speaking a DAWless rig.

My intention for this rig is for it to be a complete system. I do not want to get sucked into buying extra Eurorack modules to get this all working. The only other item I might consider adding is a drum machine. The Mackie mixer can accommodate two further stereo pairs, and the Mother 32 would have to send MIDI out to a MIDI splitter rather than directly to the Timeline so that it can sync the signal.
